Tier list: The BEST newsletter growth channels (Nov 2026)

Here’s my newsletter growth tier list (based on my personal experience and data from 10M+ subscribers add for clients).

You’ll notice some of the most popular tactics are near the bottom of my list.

I recently analyzed 87,000+ subscribers and 2,000+ customers across my own businesses. Plus, millions of subscribers across clients' lists.

The difference in subscriber quality between acquisition channels was massive.

Here's what I found:

→ Organic: $48.76 in revenue per subscriber

→ Paid social: $6.06 per subscriber

→ Recommendations: $0.73 per subscriber

That difference is why I rank YouTube, LinkedIn, Instagram, and Meta ads so highly.

They give you ways to consistently attract people who are actually interested in what you're selling.

Meanwhile, tactics like paid recommendations can make your subscriber count look great while adding very little revenue.

I've seen this firsthand. We removed inactive subscribers from lower-quality sources because they hurt engagement and deliverability.

A few other rankings people might disagree with:

  • YouTube is the best long-term organic growth channels.

  • Meta ads are still the #1 paid acquisition channel. Scale Meta before spending money anywhere else on growth.

  • Substack Notes is an emerging social platform that could become the best organic channel for newsletter growth. If you're not publishing there yet, you should start now.

  • Twitter/X has fallen significantly as a newsletter growth channel. It's the worst social platform for creators and business owners.

  • Newsletter cross-promotions and sponsorships can bring in incredibly valuable subscribers, but they're expensive and difficult to scale.

  • Referral programs are overrated for most publishers.

My advice:

Pick one organic discovery channel, one partnership strategy, and add paid acquisition once you understand your economics.

You only need a 2-3 growth channels that consistently bring in the right subscribers.
