How to Build a Newsletter That Grows Itself

The 3-rule content strategy that took Moodboard from zero to 1,000 subscribers in 27 days (using just 4 LinkedIn posts)

This week, I’m sharing a guest post from my long time friend and former colleague, Ryan Carr. Ryan and I previously worked at The Hustle together. Now, Ryan runs an agency that helps founders acquire more clients with newsletters and writes the best newsletter I’ve read on vibe marketing.

I’ll let Ryan take it from here…

I ran an experiment.

I wanted to apply all of the lessons that we had learned over 3 years of building + growing newsletters for our partners at Tailwind and grow a newsletter from 0 -> 1,000 subscribers in less than 30 days, 100% organically.

The constraints:

  • One newsletter per week

  • Only one social media post per edition on my very inactive LinkedIn account (I hadn’t posted in 6 months 🥴)

4 editions, 4 posts, and 445k impressions later, we hit the 1k subscriber mark (with 3 days to spare).

Today, I'm breaking down the exact content and growth strategy we used (+ some prompts so that you can do it yourself).

It's a small part of the same system we use at Tailwind to build and grow our clients' newsletters.

Let’s get into it 👇

A Growth-First Strategy

The standard newsletter growth playbook treats your content and your lead magnet as two separate assets.

You write the newsletter for your existing subscribers, then you build some separate PDF or mini-course or tool to attract new ones.

I think that's backwards (and it doubles your workload!).

At Tailwind, every newsletter we build follows a few rules:

Rule 1: Answer one specific, valuable question per edition

One real problem your ideal reader has, answered completely.

Specificity is an important piece of this. Think "My 3 favorite Claude Skills for creating viral LinkedIn posts" rather than "Some thoughts on AI marketing."

This sets us up well from a growth perspective too. Specific and outcome-driven topics are the ones that perform when you promote them.

Rule 2: Aim to make every edition a standalone, evergreen asset

Every edition should be self-contained and as evergreen as possible. Something a stranger could land on cold, six months from now, and immediately get value from.

Execute well and you'll have built an evergreen library that you always have in your back pocket.

Thanks to this strategy, I find myself going back and pulling editions as sales assets all the time.

When a prospect asks how we approach something, we send them the edition where we documented the exact workflow. It answers "here's how we do what we do" better than any pitch deck.

Rule 3: Start with distribution in mind

Before writing anything, ask what else this edition can do for you after it ships. I like to call it "content mileage."

Every edition that follows the first two rules becomes a content hub that you can repurpose into YouTube scripts, X threads, LinkedIn posts, and more.

And, most importantly, it becomes a lead magnet for driving new subscribers (more on this in a second).

It’s a virtuous cycle of organic list growth.

There are tricks, tactics, and prompts that I’m going to share with you shortly, but I can not overstate how important the initial content strategy is in setting yourself up for growth.

Turning an Edition Into a Lead Magnet

Okay, so now you’ve written a newsletter that fulfills those two rules.

Let’s get a bit more tactical. Here's one way a single edition can become a growth machine:

Gate the juiciest part. This is easy in Beehiiv. You drop a subscriber break widget into the edition right before the most valuable section (the full prompt, the complete workflow, the template). Non-subscribers can read the setup and see exactly what they're about to get, but they have to enter their email to get the solution.

Promote it with a comment-to-get post. You've seen these all over LinkedIn: "Comment WORKFLOW and I'll send it to you." There's a reason they're everywhere. They work. Every comment pushes the post into that commenter's network, so reach builds as the comments stack up. If LinkedIn isn’t your thing, we’ve also worked with operators that are doing this on Instagram to great success (using a tool like Manychat to automate the process).

Send the DMs manually. When the comments roll in, I DM each person myself (or have someone on my team do it). The DM is nothing fancy: a quick hello and the link to the article. The DMs are also a great opportunity to connect 1-on-1 with interesting people in your field or niche. It may even provide a chance for you to get an initial conversation started with a potential customer/client!

This is the exact strategy we used to grow our newsletter, Moodboard, from 0 -> 1,000 subs in just 27 days. We only did 4 of these LinkedIn posts (each based on the first 4 editions of the newsletter) to achieve that growth.

The biggest one (giving away our entire AI-assisted ad creation workflow) did 3,529 comments and 234,000+ impressions on its own.

Not every post needs to take off, but every edition should be “gate-worthy” so that when one does blow-up, that traffic converts into newsletter subscribers.

The Prompts

Now (so that you have something that you can take and put this into practice, here are a couple of prompts that you can use to repurpose your newsletter content into

Prompt 1 analyzes any piece of content and generates 4 LinkedIn posts, each built around one of the emotions that make content go viral. You can access the prompt here.

Prompt 2 takes your favorite post from the batch and converts it into comment-to-get format so that you can easily drive new subscribers from LinkedIn. You can access that prompt here.

Give It a Try!

If you're putting in the effort to create and publish great content every week, you should absolutely be getting the very most out of that content for growth, sales, and distribution.

The next time you sit down to plan an edition, ask what else it can do for you after it ships. Then gate the best part, run the prompts, post, and send the DMs.

(And if you'd rather have a team run this entire newsletter funnel for you or your business, strategy, writing, growth, all of it, that's exactly what we do at Tailwind.)
