7 Best Ways To Grow Your Email List In 2026

Here is the “meta” (most effective tactics available) for newsletter growth right now.

This list is based on my personal data, research, interviews, and client work (GrowLetter’s agency has driven 10M+ emails subscribers for the largest publishers and creators in the world).

1) Meta ads

The tactic: Meta ads to newsletter (or lead magnet) landing page, then onboarding survey to collect first-party data and phone number.

Facebook and Instagram ads remain the paid acquisition. #1 channel.

Meta delivers the best balance of low-cost, high-quality subscribers that convert into customers.

Plus, your learnings on Meta translate to other ad platforms. For example, are you a B2B company that wants to run LinkedIn ads? It's a great option. But you should start with Meta, figure out what creative works, and then translate that to LinkedIn for better results.

Examples of brands that are crushing it with this tactic:

  • 1440 Media

  • The Flyover

  • The Assist

2) Instagram Reels & ManyChat

The tactic: Instagram Reel with a CTA to comment a “keyword” that triggers a ManyChat automation to deliver a lead magnet and collect emails.

This is the most scalable organic growth tactic right now.

(#3 below is a close second).

The algorithmic discovery and viral potential of Instagram Reels is unmatched.

I've talked to multiple creators who have added 10,000+ email subscribers from one Instagram Reel that includes a CTA for a lead magnet relevant to the content.

Examples of brands that are crushing it with this tactic:

3) Youtube + custom lead magnets

The tactic: Create a lead magnet tailored to each YouTube video’s topic. Include a CTA for it in the video. And link in the description (and QR code on screen) to turn viewers into newsletter subscribers.

Most people use the same lead magnet for every piece of content they publish.

But the founders and creators are growing their email list the fastest from YouTube, do something different.

Here’s how it works:

  • Create a custom lead magnet for each video

  • The lead magnet must be hyper relevant to the video topic. The lead mag delivers a “next step”, resource, or it solves a problem that the video creates.

  • For example, let's say I made this deep dive into a YouTube video “7 best ways to grow your email list in 2026”. I could provide a lead magnet that goes deeper into the number #1 tactic I recommend.

  • in the video, you'll have a call to action for the lead magnet. usually at about 30% into the video and an additional reminder at the end.

  • Your lead magnet landing page will be the first link in the video description

    • Plus, some creators put a QR code on screen, so viewers can sign up to get the lead magnet if they're watching on TV.

When your lead magnet closely matches your content, more people will click, sign up, and join your email list.

This helps each piece of content bring you more subscribers.

Examples of brands that are crushing it with this tactic:

4) Lead magnet swaps (and partnerships)

The tactic: Partner with a related newsletter to promote each other’s lead magnets.

2 ways to do this:

Method #1, swaps: Team up with a founder, creator, publisher who serves a a similar audience to you, but not a direct competitor.

You both agree to promote each other's lead magnets (or multiple lead magnets to both of your newsletter audiences.

To make it fair:

  • Both parties send 1-2 dedicated marketing email for the lead magnet

  • Or, 2-3 newsletter ad spots

  • Or, if one partner has a much bigger audience than the other, you can agree to promote until you reach click parity.

(Here's what click parity means in practice: The person with the larger audience promotes first. And let's say the dedicated email for the lead magnet drove 500 clicks. Then the second party with a small audience needs to send dedicated marketing emails or use newsletter ad space until they send ~500 clicks to the other party. That makes things fair even when the audience sizes are different)

Method #2, co-created lead magnet: you'll follow the same process as method number one, but instead of promoting the other party's lead magnet (and your partner promoting yours), you'll co-create a lead magnet together. Build one landing page. Ppromote it together and share the leads you get.

Both methods work.

I recommend starting with method one because it's faster. and if you find a great partner after you complete method one, try method two with them to squeeze out more growth from each other's audiences.

Here's why lead magnet swaps work:

  1. Your subscriber quality and conversion rate into buyers is insanely high. When you get a lead from another newsletter in your niche, you'll see 70%+ open rates, 10-20% click-through rates, and double the conversion rate to customer.

  2. You don't have to publish more content on social media or YouTube. You don't have to spend more money on ads to grow. You're just working with a partner to promote a lead magnet that may have already created.

  3. It’s repeatable. You can run this playbook over and over with partners once every 1-2 months, and do it with multiple partners in the long run.

5) LinkedIn viral giveaways

The tactic: Create a valuable resource (lead manget) and post about it on LinkedIn, ask people to comment for access, then DM each commenter an email signup link. each comment on the post helps increase reach.

Here’s to apply this tactic:

  • Create a lead magnet or email gate a newsletter you've published. This is the “thing” you’ll give away.

  • Create a social post about the lead magnet. (Instead of calling it a lead magnet you’ll call it a “playbook/guide/cheatsheet/template/blueprint/etc”)

  • Ask people to comment on your post so you can DM them a link to get access. Then DM them a link to the landing page — and reply to their comment so they get a notification about checking their DMs.

Example DM to deliver the lead magnet

LinkedIn viral giveaway post examples:

Daniel Bustamante shares great frameworks and examples on how to do these well.

Note: I've talked to big LinkedIn creators who say the platform is throttling posts that use the word "comment." These large creators have found workarounds by implying that you need a comment without actually using the word. Example.

6) Free events (virtual or in person)

The tactic: Promote a free event on social, YouTube, with partners, and paid ads. Capture emails and phone numbers through an application or registration form.

You can use events like lead magnet. But better.

Make them free, invite guest speakers who agree to promote the event with you, and get a sponsor to pay you to do it.

A free event with great speakers can attract thousands of registrations (and these registrations are typically high-intent leads that fit your ideal customer profile).

To promote the event, use the same tactics you would to promote a lead magnet:

  • Meta ads

  • Reels + ManyChat

  • LinkedIn "comment to get” post

  • And much more - make sure your guest speakers promote it too

Free in-person events are more financially risky, but they work the same way. The only difference is you'll have an attendee cap, so you'll ask people to apply rather than register.

Also, a free in-person event doesn't need to be a big conference. It could be a dinner limited to 7-10 people, a happy hour, meet up, and more.

This is also a great way to grow your SMS marketing list.

7) Targeted newsletter recommendations

The tactic: Reach out to newsletters who serve a similar audience but are not direct competitors. Swap free post-signup recommendations using the beehiiv recommendation network, Kit’s creator network, or Substack recommendations.

newsletter recommendations are a tricky growth channel.

If you do them the wrong way, you can flood your email list with low-quality, low-intent signups that don't open and generate spam complaints.

But if you partner with a handful of the RIGHT newsletters, it can be an amazing automated source of growth.

It’s all about finding the right partners. and you only need 2-4 max.

What you want is recommendations from other newsletters with the same customer profile as yours.

For example, MarketBeat, a publisher that does $50M+ per year in revenue, has talked extensively about how they've driven ROI through co-reg (recommendation) sources like AfterOffers (It works BECAUSE they only accept recommendations from other financial publishers).

I can't emphasize this part enough: The newsletters publishers you get recommendations from need to perfectly match your content and offer.

If you can find a few partners that mesh well with you and you agree to recommend each other, do it. If not, skip this tactic.

Examples of brands that are crushing it with this tactic:

  • Jay Clouse

  • Lenny’s Newsletter

That’s it

Now, none of these growth tactics are “easy” to pull off.

But they flat-out work.

If you're looking for a growth hack to magically add hundreds of subscribers per day without doing any real work, that’s not what you'll get here.

There are many ways to pay for 10k+ email subscribers (at $0.05-$0.50 per contact). But tactics like that never lead to real readership and sales.

They just boost your ego with useless list growth.

Instead, this is a list of the best tactics to build an email list of readers that fits your ideal customer profile and BUY (from you or your sponsors).

Last thing: If you would like me to do a deep dive into ONE of these tactics and share a step-by-step playbook with examples of how to apply it — reply and let me know which tactic would you like me to cover.
